    Excellent podcast
If you’re interested in inside stories on the technical side of how records are made then this is the podcast for you. Stellar guests that have made amazing records over the last 4-5 decades interviewed by guys who are recording engineers and know what questions to ask. This allows the guests to feel comfortable and lends itself to fun, insightful conversation. Stewart and John know how to get the discussion rolling and then out of the way. Excellent. Tony Visconti, Jack Douglas, Shelley Yakkus, etc!!

    My favorite podcast
Covers just the right grounds to keep novices and experts of recording engaged at once. The hosts aren’t obsessed with hearing themselves talk like other music podcasters. Interview choices are impeccable. They’re actual veterans of the trade, and having come from the east coast rock scene, everything they say feels so near and dear.

    Thanks—great education!
These guys are so great—great for stories, history, gear... and laughs. They’ve pushed me to love different music and hear everything differently.

    Holy Gear Crap
I don’t know how Stewie puts up with John. Annoying bastard. Loved the interviews with Shelly Yakus. Anything with Will Wittman is great and I’ve come to appreciate Kurt Vile and Drive By Truckers more, can you believe it, through this podcast. If only John would talk less about himself, sheesh.

    Touring Emotional Support
Thank you! You guys have become part of my morning routine while touring for the past few years. Those 6am lobby calls are a little less crappy when I start my days listening to you guys. Amazing stories and so much wisdom in and out of the studio. Lots can be applied to the live sound touring world, especially the straight forward attitudes :) Thank you again!

    The bomb digity
For me it started as a young naïve musician chasing that all to illusive, hit you in the chest kick drum sound... next thing you know I’m buying some thing called a compressor... before you know it I’m a full blown addict locked away in some dark dingy basement, with padding on the walls, playing with my “equipment” all night. Love this podcast! These are my peeps and frankly that both scares me and excites me.

    You’re the best!
These guys are the real deal. The podcast is extremely entertaining, engaging and hugely informative. I would say Johnny and Stewie are the car talk of the audio recording podcast world. It’s that Italian American directness, humor and not taking yourself too seriously. Ive been involved in audio recording since I was a teenager, a hobbyist and a professional and I put it down for a few years. Listening to this podcast completely reignited my love for the medium. Thank you so much Johnny and Stewie for sharing your amazing industry stories and having such interesting guest on your show. Looking forward to more podcasts!

The University of the Golden age of Greats
I'm a late bloomer as an engineer, producer. Born in '66' of Italian imigrant father and Brooklyn born Italian 1st gen mother, my 1st love was and has always been music, but I did a thousand other things instead. As a player and a visual artist, I watched film and vinyl in disbelief as it vanished. When after 2 kids and 52 years I finally made the jump to digital recording, (because that's all I could barely afford) determined to make some great music,I longed for the history and knowledge of the great days of the tape based studios. But I knew squat about recording. I wanted to be that intern, that runner, that schmuck starting at ground level, but at 52 I knew that ship had passed and I was ship out of luck, but Gear Club, Johnny and Stewy, came along with the University of, not only recording, but the great stories and human aspect behind the industry. Since finding Gear Club I listen in the car, on my headphones, everywhere. I repeat listen! I can't get enough of the entire spectrum, from analogue to digital. I feel at last there is a happy medium between thge 2 worlds. Gear Club is the next best thing to being in the room watching these guys and their guests, play, record, mix, master, promote, and distribute. Then you have creation guys, who defined, invented, innovated the gear we hear and love! Amazing. Thank you guys and keep on keeping on, I'm learning so much.Man I would love to see you and your guests in action, but short of that, its the perfect stuff at the right time! Thanks forever! A Big Chunk of Music-making History
I'm struck by how much music-making history is in these podcasts, told through stories in and out of the studio by the best studio engineers of an entire generation. Also of note is the clear tracking of the analog to digital shift in studio engineering and in how studios were run "then and now." I'm also struck by the critical, but overall positive ways in which these great engineers morphed and adjusted to major cultural shifts as music went "copyleftist." Strongly recommended for music history buffs!

    Genuine Knowledge of the Artform
In the age of endless information available on the internet..... podcasts like this one keep the needle pointing north and expose the true underlining meaning of our artform. Thank you for curating such amazing shows and great guests and ‘spewing’ truth to our generation which might not be able to so easily absorb this knowledge otherwise. (Don’t take that the wrong way, you guys aren’t that old :) but your wisdom is certainly appreciated coming from this 35 year old engineer.)

    One of My Favorite Podcasts
Stewie and John. Love you guys! You’ve probably heard this before, but your rapport reminds me of the brothers that were the car guys on NPR. Lots of good-natured fun and kidding around bolstered by a clear foundation of technical knowledge. I’ve enjoyed every episode. It’s wonderful to have such engaging guests with so many wonderful stories to share. I’m a singer/songwriter, not a gearhead per se and I was afraid the technical side would overshadow my limited knowledge but that hasn’t been the case. Just wonderful conversations with some of the people responsible for making the great music we all love. A good time well spent! More episodes, please!

I've always loved music and, while I never have been nor ever will be involved in the recording process, I love hearing the stories and anecdotes about the recording of artists and albums that I've listened to over the years. Always entertaining and not too geeky for us non-techies.

    My favorite podcast
Thanks Stewart and John for the time and effort you put into this podcast. It’s a valuable recourse and highly entertaining. I listen to a lot of music/ music industry podcasts, Tape Op etc. and this is my favorite. Just the banter between you guys would make it great. The guests are all phenomenal. And then the song reviews.... It’s three awesome podcasts wrapped into one. I spark a J and enjoy a half hour or so of entertaining music history.

Required listening for anyone who loves music!
Great podcast. A pair of guys at the top of their game interviewing other geniuses in the science and art of recording music. Not only will you learn about how the music you hear is made, but it will make you actually hear the music differently. Start with episode 48 (Alex Case) and you will hear new things in some songs that you have probably listened to 100 times before and never even noticed.
  • southern dragon
Amazing podcast that balances learning, humor, banter and all things audio
I have listened to every single podcast these guys have made. I look forward to enjoy each one in it’s entirety but after listening to #48 with Alex Case I am compelled to leave a 5 star review. I’ve been meaning to leave a review for a while but after this amazing interview with Alex it would be criminal not to. I learned a lot and did so while getting immense enjoyment from these talented pros who share their enthusiasm and knowledge all while making you laugh. I have literally paid for audio related teaching products that are not this good! Thanks guys. Keep up the amazing work!!

    Best Audio Nerd Podcast!
I love this podcast so much as a student of the recording arts. I’m 3 years separated from finishing my masters in sound recording but I always consider myself a student. I learn so much about recording production history and techniques in this podcast and I love every minute of it. Keep up the great work fellas. Also, the Alex Case episode was phenomenal and that man knows how to teach recording production. I’m very lucky to have studied under him.

I absolutely love this podcast. Yeah they talk about gear and all that but what’s really interesting and draws me in are people’s life stories and experiences. Just brilliant. Please keep it going!!!

    So glad I found this!
I’ve been interested in music, production, and the people behind it since I was in my teens. This is exactly the stuff I want to hear and learn about, not to mention the great guests they host as well. Nice work fellas! 👌🏻

Great Podcast For Songwriters And Studio Geeks
I love this podcast, as they interview some of my favorite artists, engineers and producers. I also have had the pleasure of working with John (he mixed two of my band's records), and he hasn't changed a bit. It's like being in the studio with him again. Love it.

    Great podcast
I love the stories about some of my favorite musicians as well as the gear talk!

Great podcast w one annoying flaw
This really is a fascinating podcast for anyone interested in audio engineering and producing. Great guests and often very funny. The only problem I have with it is they start every show with a frikkin’ telephone ring! Like the sound that makes any normal person reach for their phone! Uncool distraction from whatever I happen to be doing - even if I don’t fall for it any more. Almost as bad as anyone inserting the sound of a police siren into any song thinking they were clever. Ugh!
  • JohnnywithaJ
    Love it
Love this podcast. Refreshingly different from other audio engineering podcasts I listen to. But at the end of every episode I get what I really came for; I learned something. 👍👍👍

A gem, worthwhile and extremely informative!
Gear Club podcasts are like eating a great meal, I savor every minute. Stewie and John know their stuff, are a couple of cats that make me laugh, and clearly create the vibe that inspires their guests to enjoy sharing their knowledge and stories. Truly a gem, worthwhile and extremely informative! Highly recommended!!! HG

    Super Interesting!!
I just want to hang out with these guys and pick their brains, listen to their stories and experiences. However, since I can’t, this podcast is the next best thing. I’m a non-pro musician who occasionally records bands in my home and I love to hear John and Stewie talk about professional studios and their experiences and techniques in the recording industry as well as those of all of their “illustrious” guests. I end up laughing out loud a lot during their discussions and its always interesting to hear the dialogue between them and what they’re currently working on. A word of warning though, you may find yourself buying a bunch of records after hearing guests discuss the setup, methods, gear, rooms, consoles mics etc used. For instance, Ive never listened to many of the later Dylan records but after listening to Chris Shaw discuss how he set up the session for recording “Love And Theft” I had to go and get the record to put it in context and it sounded f*&%ing amazing! Its this kind of insight that makes this podcast so great and enhances one’s depth of appreciation of the listening and recording experience.

    The Art of Gear
These guys are masters... love every episode I've heard. Funny how talking about the machinations behind art opens up the passageways and makes talking about the art itself easier, more natural. It's like the great fake out. It's about gear, but so much more than that. If you are a student of music, listen to this.
  • Mixor Kev

    Excellent interviews
Like reading a bunch of music biographies - but way more fun. Plenty of anecdotes from legendary recordings session. Plus, the banter between the lads and interviewees is hilarious. Delves into the nitty gritty of recording in a way that makes it accesible. Must listen if you're into music.

    So far so good!
It was great to hear a fairly in depth conversation with Steve Shelley. Maggie Vail and Greg Calbi episodes are also fantastic. Looking forward to many more hours of this show.

    GREAT
I love the utter lack of pretense. Real guys who know what really matters: the music. Feels a lot like hanging out with your with friends if your friends were world class audio engineers and producers with decades of experience. The Magic Shop episodes in particular were as touching as they were entertaining and interesting. Makes me want to scrape together my savings and fly out to spend a week in the studio with these guys!
  • efdefd
Consistently great listen for music fans
I love listening to John and Stewart talk with their guests about music, the recording/mixing process, and oh yeah gear. But they never get bogged down in jargon or insidery chatter; it's entertaining, informative, and fun to listen to for any music fan regardless of whether you've ever been on either side of a recording console.

    Great Goofy Gear Guys Gab
Normally I'm not a fan of reminiscing about the old days, but these guys are funny and put everything in the context of the albums, the industry and its present condition. Some really cool behind-the-scenes and tall tales about some of the most famous names and albums in the business. It's a little long, but the album review at the end is worth it.
  • SuperPostLunamax
    Love it
The intimacy of these podcasts is grea - listening feels like you're just in the control room after a session trading old stories. John and Stew are really funny and full of great stories, and the guests are awesome.

    Finally!
Finally a great podcast for recording professionals and just about anyone interested in recording or music! Love this podcast—nerdy, funny and interesting!

Finally, my kind of music recording podcast
Old Record Plant stories and other fun stuff. If you like to move kick drums around for three hours until they're back where they started or when you talk about loops it's not about 10 feet of 1/4 tape held up by pencils this podcast isn't for you.
  • xtianrut
    Amazing!
Great studio stories, and great people talking about recording? It gets no better than this...
